Winter 2010 » Cover Stories
A look ahead
We asked some cuurent students to tell us about how they are doing in reaching their goals. We also talked with a few students who are starting this winter about what will make them successful. Here are their stories.
Todd Sollar
Todd Sollar came to Sinclair with the goal of getting an associate’s degree. Todd has not even graduated yet, and his achievements have already far surpassed his goals.
After losing his job of more than 10 years with Delphi, Todd was 32 years old, and terrified of being a student at that age. Even with the initial fear, “Sinclair was the best thing that could have happened to me,” Todd said.
Sinclair’s proximity to Todd’s home and great reputation confirmed his decision to come to Sinclair. While here, Todd says President Steve Johnson and his staff; Terry Myworm, a co-op coordinator; all his teachers; and the tutoring center have made for a great experience. Being on the Dean’s List several times also didn’t hurt.
Todd will graduate in the spring with a secured full-time position. He says the job “is exactly what I wanted; working with robots and traveling the world.”
Jeremy Massengale
Jeremy Massengale came to Sinclair as part of a legacy: his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all attended Sinclair. Jeremy says it was the “good school, good teachers, and good price” at Sinclair that confirmed his decision and are helping him reach his educational goals.
Jeremy is studying physics at Sinclair, and is on-track to graduate in the spring. This year, Jeremy got the very unique opportunity to visit NASA facilities and get a feel for what a NASA scientist actually does. NASA gave Jeremy the chance to “pull all the science work I had learned and done in research to design a line drawing of a rover-mission to Mars,” Jeremy said. It also helped him develop what he wants to do as a career.
Now that Jeremy is thinking about graduation, he’s looking at local four-year universities to continue his education. Ultimately, Jeremy would like to receive his doctorate degree.
The Sinclair experience was a major part of Jeremy’s educational and career development.
“This is my life and my career path and I am going to get every little bit out of it that I can,” Jeremy said. “Many of the faculty at Sinclair have been really helpful with that.”
Jennifer Christophel
After attending a four-year college without finishing her degree, Jennifer Christophel studied elementary education and worked with children after leaving college. Jennifer has worked with kids for more than 10 years, but feels ready for a new career.
Jennifer is starting her first classes at Sinclair this coming January. She is hoping to earn an Associate degree in Business Information Systems with a Medical Office Option.
Jennifer is looking for a career that has a little more stability within the Dayton area. She hopes that with this degree she will be able to find long term employment.
