Sinclair, Dayton vie for Gates Foundation
Dayton selected as one of seven cities nationwide to compete for a Gates Foundation grant.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in cooperation with the National League of Cities, recently selected Dayton as one of seven cities nationwide to compete for a Communities Learning in Partnership (CLIP) grant. Each city was awarded a $250,000 planning grant to build commitment and partnerships to increase student success, as well as to develop more supportive policies and practices as ways to measure progress.
Sinclair Community College – in partnership with the city of Dayton, Montgomery County, Dayton Public Schools, and other community, government and business organizations – is developing a three-year implementation plan to increase the number of people earning college degrees.
Sinclair President Dr. Steven Johnson said, “Our community’s long-term economic growth is tied to the educational attainment of our citizens. The CLIP initiative directly aligns with Sinclair’s and our partners’ missions, and will help our community find new and scalable ways to support young adults’ obtaining credentials.”
Dayton will submit a proposal in June 2010, and hopes to be one of the cities selected to receive a $3 million implementation grant.
