Expanding to meet the need

Less than three years after its opening, Sinclair Community College’s Courseview Campus Center is expanding. Announced on January 30, 2010, at the Sinclair board of trustees’ annual board meeting, the expansion will double capacity at the Mason, Ohio, campus.
“[Courseview] has proven to be financially sustainable,” Sinclair President Dr. Steven Johnson said. “We always knew we would have 1,000 students at some point, but we got there faster than expected. It’s very promising.”
Approximately 1,000 students were enrolled at Courseview for the current quarter, and the campus will have served nearly 2,000 students throughout this academic year. By adding a new building, Sinclair hopes to increase enrollment to 2,000 students per quarter and continue increasing to nearly 4,000 students per quarter within 10 years.
The Sinclair board of trustees will invest between $4 and $6 million in the next few years, to support the next phase of development at Courseview. None of this money will come from the Sinclair levy, which by law can only be used for Montgomery County.
When it opened in September 2007, Courseview Campus Center became the first bricks-and-mortar college campus in Warren County, filling a need made even more urgent by the country’s current economic turmoil.
