Emerging industry development
Efforts must focus not only on current demand, but also on the needs of emerging, high-growth markets.
To remain relevant to the Dayton region’s training needs, Sinclair Community College’s Workforce Development & Corporate Services efforts must focus not only on current demand, but also on the needs of emerging, high-growth markets.
Photonics
Mound Laser & Photonics Center, Inc. (MLPC) is a local small business that combines research, development and contract manufacturing in laser microfabrication technology for defense and medical-device applications. The company collaborates with the Air Force Research Laboratory, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and other Department of Defense branches to develop new microfabrication techniques and applications, while simultaneously transitioning the technology to the commercial marketplace.
MLPC recently hired three individuals trained by Sinclair to work in its facility: one in laser welding and two in laser micromachining. “Sinclair continues to provide quality individuals to help meet our workforce needs,” stated Dr. Larry Dosser, president and CEO of MLPC. “They are making a significant contribution to the company and this community.”
Sinclair is working to pursue the development of a photonics curriculum and lab facilities, to bring this program to the region.
Bioscience industry
The region surrounding Cincinnati and Dayton is the pharmaceutical hub of Ohio. BioOhio has been awarded a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration to implement the Ohio Bioscience Industry Workforce Preparedness project. This three-year project will provide training for up to 700 displaced or underemployed workers in declining industries to become better equipped for careers in Ohio’s growing bioscience industry. In addition, 40 incumbent workers will receive advanced training to move into higher-level positions, creating new entry-level job opportunities. Industry partners include Alkermes, Inc.; Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Eurand; and IMDS.
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Sinclair are serving as the regional co-leads for this project in Southwest Ohio, working collaboratively with statewide and local partners to plan and implement the program.
